New York City officials have identified the man who set himself on fire outside of the courthouse where the hush-money trial of former President Donald Trump is taking place as Max Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Florida. According to Jeffrey B. Maddrey, the Chief of Department for the NYPD, Azzarello walked into Collect Pond Park, which is located directly across the street from the courthouse, before he set himself alight. The incident occurred on Thursday, March 9, 2023, as demonstrators gathered outside of the courthouse to protest the trial.

A trip to the Big Apple

Azzarello's family reported him missing earlier this week after he traveled to New York City from Florida. His reasons for travelling to the city and setting himself on fire are still unknown, but the incident has sparked outrage and sparked a conversation about the dangers of political extremism.

Witnesses recount the scene

Eyewitnesses at the scene described a chaotic scene as protestors screamed and fled when Azzarello set himself ablaze. "I saw him walking into the park, and then suddenly he was on fire," said one witness. "People were running and screaming, it was pandemonium." The NYPD was quick to respond to the incident and extinguished the flames, but Azzarello was pronounced dead at the scene.

An ongoing investigation

The NYPD is currently investigating the incident and trying to determine Azzarello's motives. The FBI has also joined the investigation, as the incident occurred near a federal courthouse. The death of Azzarello has sent shockwaves through the city and the nation, and has raised questions about the state of political discourse in the United States.
